iPhone Update Joy: Broken Bluetooth, E-mail
Apple packed some nice goodies into the 1.1.3 iPhone firmware update, so there’s been a predictable stampede to the download servers and an equally predictable trickle of "issues." Reported problems include: Repeated failures to install the update. No sound from the iPhone’s internal speaker after installing the update. Previously compatible Bluetooth devices no longer work. Can’t download messages with Mail app. Bricked!!! (Read the full post about ‘iPhone Update Joy: Broken Bluetooth, E-mail’…)

Tooth Tunes: Brush ‘n’ roll!

Tooth Tunes: Brush ‘n’ roll!
Brush ‘n’ roll just about sums it all up. The new Tooth Tunes toothbrush can get you shaking your booty while brushing those (hopefully) pearly whites. Tooth Tunes toothbrushes use a bone-conduction technology wherein sound waves from the music are transmitted via the jawbone to your inner ear. Think hearing voices inside your head, except it’s so much better! Needless to say, you can only hear music while the bristles are in contact with your teeth. If you want to pump up the volume, simply brush a bit harder. And in case you’ve got enough of the pseudo-schizophrenism (no, no, that’s not a real word), you can always flick the switch off. Steve Jobs Denies That Chine iPhone Talks Halted
Recently, there was news that the talks between China Mobile and Apple had stopped. It is unlikely that anyone thought that the deal was cancelled altogether, but that it was a “pause” because both parties could not reach an agreement. Anyhow, Steve jobs confirmed that negotiations are still going on and that Apple is still interested. Apple surely is and Mobile China is also very interested, but it feels that it has the upper-hand in the negotiations. (Read the full post about ‘Steve Jobs Denies That Chine iPhone Talks Halted’…)

If Jobs says “people don’t read anymore,” does this headline really exist?
Posted Jan 16th 2008 3:06PM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Handhelds Jobs to NYT on Kindle: “It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore. Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.” Yes, it’s true, the only books Steve thinks we need are MacBooks.Irony: You’re reading right now.Further irony: You’re probably not reading Engadget on a Kindle (at least not through its regular RSS reader). Is this like geeky Koan or something? Does this mean Engadget doesn’t exist? Either way, we get his point. It’s a damn shame fewer people aren’t reading real books.Tags: M4A, video, computers, buyers (Read the full post about ‘If Jobs says “people don’t read anymore,” does this headline really exist?’…)

Hanlin’s V9 e-book reader with 9.7-inch e-ink display previewed
Posted Jan 16th 2008 10:47AM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Handhelds Although there’s no arguing that the 6-inch e-ink display used in both the Kindle and the Sony PRS-505 looks beautiful, we’re not exactly huge fans of endless scrolling — which is why we’re pretty intrigued by these shots of the Hanlin V9 that just popped up on on the Mobileread forums. The update to the V3 features a 9.7-inch display that definitely cranks the overall dimensions, but being able to view a full letter-size page seems like a tangible enough benefit — and the addition of WiFi, EV-DO, and handwriting recognition just sweetens the pot. Apparently there are some issues mass-producing that screen, but when they get s (Read the full post about ‘Hanlin’s V9 e-book reader with 9.7-inch e-ink display previewed’…)

RFID encrypted enclosures
In a move to help support the reduction of data theft Sharkoon have launched the $50 Sharkoon Swift-Case Securita with RFID encryption to help protect against unauthorized access. Built into each of the cases for 2.5-inch SATA hard drives is a RFID transceiver that responds solely to the accompanying RFID transponder which is a simple plastic fob design that attaches securely to key chains. When you first set up the security in produces a unique encryption key after which you can easily lock or unlock the drive using the transponder.
