Blu-ray sales outpacing standard DVD sales

Blu-ray sales outpacing standard DVD sales
Now that the latest disc based format war seems to be coming to an end with Blu-ray as it’s winner, it’s a good time to look at how it’s doing compared to the venerable DVD format that it’s attempting to replace. It’s important to remember that DVD was essentially unopposed as the new standard bearer of next generation video during it’s run (no I don’t count Laser Disc as a viable competitor.) In turn, there was little more than consumer demand to drive the prices of DVD players down. With the competition between Sony and Toshiba’s formats forcing the prices down earlier, Blu-ray players are out-pacing DVD at the same stage. Nikon’s New SLR Leaked, the D60 [Leakage]

Nikon’s New SLR Leaked, the D60 [Leakage]
Ooh, it looks like someone has snuck up behind Nikon and lifted her skirt before she was set to show off her goodies at PMA. (Was that opening sexist? Yeah, it was. But imagine if we used a male metaphor. There would be vomit and tears). The big news? Nikon is releasing the new D60 DSLR. It’s got the same body design as the existing D40 (pictured here), features 10.2MP, Nikon’s 3D Color Matrix Metering II system, Active D-Lighting for adjustable shadow detail, other integrated retouch settings and some pretty extreme dust prevention. In addition to a sensor cleaner, the D60 includes a Integrated Dust Reduction System that constantly chambers air away from the imaging sensor. Virgin Customers Get Speed Boost

Virgin Customers Get Speed Boost
Looks like it is a great time to be a customer of Virgin, where ‘L’ subscribers are set to receive a speed boost from 4Mbit to a whopping 10Mbps. And how much do these subscribers have to fork out? Not a single penny, which translates to free. According to Virgin, a connection like this makes it possible (theoretically) to download a typical audio track within four seconds, a whole album in less than a minute and even a whole TV show within five minutes! Real world usage will probably be longer though, so don’t get too excited just yet. In all probability the Traffic Management policy will still be maintained, resulting in caps of five hours for upload and download speeds whenever more than 800MB are downloaded during the peak hours (4pm to 9pm). Wii Gets 2.1 Speaker System

Wii Gets 2.1 Speaker System
With the Nintendo Wii selling tons across the world, there is an officially licensed 2.1 speaker system for the Wii from 4Gamers. Strange that a 2.1 speaker system like this has been in development for nearly a couple of years, since there are tons of such systems around for computers and other PMPs. I suppose more thought went into the design than hardware, as it blends in very nicely into any environment with a Wii beside it. Features include 30 watts RMS output, a magnetically shielded wooden subwoofer cabinet, a remote control, and a 3D audio mode for greater realism. The Wii 2.1 speaker system will hit your wallets for £69.99. (Read the full post about ‘Wii Gets 2.1 Speaker System’…)

Motorola Patents Rollable Cell Phone Screen
Motorola isn’t doing too hot these days, and will their latest filed patent help pull it out of the doldrums? Apparently, the company has filed patents for a rollable cell phone display. It seems that this new display will feature “an interface that is made of a flexible material and has an active position and an inactive position. The interface is coupled with a reservoir. The reservoir is used for storing electrorheological fluid. The user interface system also includes a source that is coupled to the reservoir. The source is used for applying an electric field to the electrorheological fluid when the interface is in the active position.” Anyone wants to take a stab at what this new model will be called?
