Toshiba CV Series
Toshiba have replaced their C series of LCD HDTVs by the new Toshiba Regza CV series. They are aiming the new Toshiba CV series at customers wishing to upgrade from an existing high specification CRT or older analog LCD TV to HDTV. Toshiba have yet to announce prices for the CV series, but we expect they to be very competitive as they are aiming the CV’s at this upgrade step market. The Toshiba CV Series will be available in March in three different sizes; 32-inch, 37-inch and 42-inch. All will be HD ready, with a 1366×768 pixel screen resolution, with a dynamic contrast ratio of up to (stated) 30,000:1 for impressive colors. (Read the full post about ‘Toshiba CV Series’…)

AIBO matches real dogs in chasing away loneliness, research claims
Posted Feb 28th 2008 11:16AM by Paul MillerFiled under: Robots While robot / human relations seem to be fairly solid at the moment, it looks like the fight has long since been on between canines and their robotic counterparts. Some researchers at Saint Louis University compared Sony’s AIBO with a mutt named Sparky at three different nursing homes, to see how residents would respond. Maybe Sparky just isn’t that affable, but the researchers found that AIBO and his living breathing competition were both equally successful in alleviating loneliness. AIBO also has the added advantage of, erm, cleanliness, and is easier for senior citizens to take care of, so it looks like Sparky is pretty much out of a job. Microsoft lowered Vista requirements to help Intel sell incompatible chipsets
Posted Feb 28th 2008 12:13PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Desktops, LaptopsSo now that the “Vista Capable” lawsuit is a full-blown class action, the judge has unsealed all 158 pages of emails between Microsoft execs trying to sort out what went wrong with the sticker program. While bits and pieces have been blacked out, what remains is still fairly incredible — although Intel’s 915 chipset was initially rejected as compatible with Vista, MS execs flatly admit that “In the end, we lowered the requirements to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 graphics embedded” and “We are caving to Intel. Crystal Icing Covers MacBook Air in Baubles
Tasteless tech customization house Crystal Icing decided to turn its hand to crudding up the macbook air. A quote from the company’s blog will acquaint you with the reasons why this is so wrong: We took all those sleepless nights you guys spent on shaving off every little gram on that Macbook Air… and added a 1/2 pound of Swarovski Crystals and an extra 1/8th inch of thickness, but isn’t it HOT!?No, it isn’t. Sparkling Hello Kitty thumb drives we can just about understand, but who in the hell is going to take what is arguably the sexiest, cleanest looking notebook available and turn it into Liberace’s laptop? The price hasn’t yet been announced, but even if it’s a dollar, it’s too much.Product page [Crystal Icing via New Launches] Tags: gadgetry, hd (Read the full post about ‘Crystal Icing Covers MacBook Air in Baubles’…)

Microsoft Firefly: Hungry Hungry Hippos for Surface
Posted Feb 28th 2008 8:06AM by Ryan BlockFiled under: Displays, Gaming Oh boy, if ever there was a worthy use case for a giant $10k multi-touch table, it’s a serene port of Hungry Hungry Hippos called Firefly, which Microsoft developed as a proof of concept for Surface. Just gather them into your jar. Go on, gather ‘em up, those 100,000 fireflies aren’t going to gather themselves. Video after the break. Biometric door lock allows key-free access to your house

Biometric door lock allows key-free access to your house

I hate messing with the lock on my door, mostly because I have only a deadbolt. This of course means that every time I walk out my door I must turn around and lock the door with my key. Wintertime is the worst, as I must fumble for my keys every time I go in or out of my house. There are days that I wish I could just use something simple like a biometric lock like this one. This door lock works like most devices with a biometric scanner. You’ll program all of the fingerprints (up to 120) directly from the keypad, eliminating the need for a PC. The handle can be positioned on either the left or right to accommodate most doors and will lock automatically. (Read the full post about ‘Biometric door lock allows key-free access to your house’…)
