Intel’s Classmate PC headed to US, European retailers
Yet another ultra-portable notebook is expected to be offering some competition for the likes of the Eee PC and Cloudbook, of course this one has been around and in the works for a while. Originally thought of as a competitor to the XO OLPC laptop, the Classmate PC has similar features to the other more full featured ultra-portables currently on the market and includes a 7-inch 800 x 480 display, an Intel 900MHz Mobile processor, 256 or 512MB of RAM, 1 or 2GB SSD, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and will be running either Linux or Windows XP. The Intel Classmate PC should be hitting both US and European retailers soon. The Classmate PC has been available on the retail markets of India, Mexico and Indonesia, but this is the first time it will be available for sale outside those areas. HP launches the 13.3-inch dv3000 laptop in Asia
Posted Mar 20th 2008 5:33PM by Nilay PatelFiled under: Laptops It’s been a while since the HP dv2000 laptop made its original appearance, and it looks like HP’s giving the newest version a new model number as well as a slight redesign — say bonjour to the dv3000. Based around an oh-so-hip 13.3-inch display, the overall look of the machine is basically the same as the older model, but it’s slightly smaller. Inside, you’re looking at a 2.5GHz T9300 Penryn Core 2 Duo, GeForce Go 8400M graphics with HDMI out, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB disk, VGA webcam, a dual-layer burner, and an unusual combo USB / eSATA port that we’d like to take a closer look at. Not a bad piece of kit for $1,399 — too bad it’s only coming out in Asia around May.Ta (Read the full post about ‘HP launches the 13.3-inch dv3000 laptop in Asia’…)

Cyborg insects survive to adulthood, ensure our doom
Posted Mar 20th 2008 9:51AM by Darren MurphFiled under: RobotsRemember those cyborg insects that seemed so much like a pipe dream just two short years ago? Yeah, those frackin’ things have somehow survived into adulthood, and are closing in on being ready to infiltrate enemy camps and extract vital information. According to a recent update on the DARPA project, the insects — which have “modified body structures and micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) embedded” within — have lasted into adulthood, and now those behind the endeavor are hoping to enable remote control of the bugs via “mechano-sensor activation” or something similar. NFC-equipped phone surfaces at FCC… with Citi logo
Posted Mar 20th 2008 6:28AM by Darren MurphFiled under: cellphones We’ve handled handsets with unorthodox keypads before, but there’s quite a bit more about this here device that’s off-kilter than just a unique method of input. Discovered in the always unpredictable database of the FCC, the Mobicom-built mobile plays on the 850 / 1900 GSM bands and features a built-in mp3 player, file manager, speakerphone and accelerometer — you know, for accessing icons by simply tilting the phone. The most astounding inclusion, however, isn’t the integrated NFC technology that allows users to make payments on the go, but rather the unmistakable logo of a financial services company. Sitting front and center. (Read the full post about ‘NFC-equipped phone surfaces at FCC… with Citi logo’…)

Guitar Grip to arrive on DS

Guitar Grip to arrive on DS

The Nintendo DS platform no longer needs to be left out of the Guitar Hero phenomenon, thanks to the Guitar Grip accessory that features four fret buttons and is attached to the DS through its GBA slot. Each purchase comes with a strap that keeps the system in place while playing, and you will also benefit from a special guitar pick stylus that is used to strum the touch screen on the DS. It seems that Guitar Hero: On Tour will also make use of the much neglected microphone on the DS, although it will probably be used to activate the ‘Star Power’ mode without letting you have to take your hands away while strumming. This summer-bound title will feature 20 licensed songs from bands like Nirvana, OK Go and No Doubt. (Read the full post about ‘Guitar Grip to arrive on DS’…)

Transformer Concept Phone

Transformer Concept Phone
This Transformer concept phone by Shkinder Maxim is a wondrous thing, as it wears many hats. Capable of functioning as a cell phone primarily, the Transformer concept phone also doubles up as a photo/video camera, a multimedia player, a projector, and even supports holographic imaging and 3D scanning! Clearly, such technology is not available for a commercial rollout as yet, but this is a concept so it is all right to go nuts over it. Features include a coupe of independent swiveling and flipping displays, letting you switch from one function to another with minimal effort. I wonder which company would be the first to come out with such a technologically advanced handset. (Read the full post about ‘Transformer Concept Phone’…)

Gumball Machine Phone

Gumball Machine Phone
The Dubble Bubble gumball machine phone helps keep your kid occupied for a whole three seconds as a toy, but it can also be used as an actual phone. Whenever there is an incoming call, circus music will start playing while flashing lights get to work to add to the overall cheery atmosphere. In addition, a gumball will pop out as a Pavlovian reward, letting those with a sweet tooth to ask their friends to call them over and over again. $139 is a bit pricey for a novelty item like this, if you ask me.
