Waterfalls come to New York City

Written by admin on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 in Gadgets and Devices.

I visited NYC for the first time last November, and let’s face it - that city has everything. Well, almost everything. While New York state can lay claim to some stunning water scenery, the water in Manhattan has always been a little… flat. I mean, it just kind of lies there.

So why not bring waterfalls to New York? That’s what New York’s Public Art Fund thought, and that’s what they are about to do.

From July to October this year, you’ll be able to see man-made cascading water features in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and on the north shore of Governors Island. The specially-commissioned installations will be 90 to 120-feet tall, operate from 7 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week, and will be lit after sunset for an even more impressive effect.

Comdex 1996: Day 1

Comdex 1996: Day 1
Before there was CES, There was Comdex. In 1996, Mike had his first book signing at Comdex and I gave myself permission to take as many pictures as I wanted with my 110 camera. This was unprecedented in my days before digital and I have scanned in the old photos and am sharing them with you over the next few days. The photo on the right is me back in 1996. I remember thinking how cute I looked and how I hardly looked fat at all. I look so different now. Is it wrong to feel like you look better at 38 than you did at 27? This is a photo of the Sands Expo Center. I had never seen the Expo Center covered with so many advertisements. Now, EVERY hotel is covered with advertisements for various companies when CES comes to town, but this looked unique to me. (Read the full post about ‘Comdex 1996: Day 1′…)

CERN set to release crazy-fast Internet

Written by admin on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 in Gadgets and Devices.

The Internet as you know it is set to become a lot faster. The Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire, more commonly known as CERN, is widely recognized as world’s largest particle physics laboratory. And while these atom smashers are better known for creating anti-matter and breaking apart the building blocks of the universe, they have also been hard at work improving the performance of Internet.

CERN’s ambitious Internet project is called, “The Grid” and uses dedicated fiber along with modern routing centers to create a new faster Internet. Just how fast?

Pretty much anything that’s predictably repetitive can be automated. As such, we expect corporate lawyers to be replaced by shiny dull robots just as soon as AI advances sufficiently beyond Japanese pet translators. Robots… lawyers… oh wait. Anyway, ASUS has mechanically responded to IBM’s patent lawsuit with a scripted suit all its own. ASUS claims that IBM is violating two of its patents related to server technology and storage on the Internet. That’s two claimed violations against IBM vs. three against ASUS — if this were a playground, IBM would win and ASUS would have to hand over its lunch money. A Bike that Walks

A Bike that Walks
Competing with the milipede with the most number of shoes worn at one time, the walking bike is a novel, intriguing, and funny bicycle design. Designed by Max Knight, this one of a kind bicycle replaces its tyres with eight trainers per. Of course, I very much doubt this’ll ever be produced in mass, but the walking bike actually (kind of) works! You can see the video below. The rides a bit bumpy, but with the bike running on shoes, I reckon most of us would be quite forgiving. Now if only we can see a walking car, I’ll be one of the most amused people on earth. Gais Lisire Series 020 Speakers

Written by admin on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 in Gadgets and Devices.

The Gais Lisire Series 020 speakers comes in the form factor of a cylinder, and brings to the table a 2.1 channel sound system consisting of a 12″ wide subwoofer tube and a couple of round satellite speakers. The subwoofer itself is powered by a 6-watt amp, while either satellite pumps out 2.5-watts per channel. This won’t be a party system, but it is good enough for a small living room or bedside companion.

Run at Night, Come Back with a Bleeding Nose

Written by admin on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 in Gadgets and Devices.

Run at Night, Come Back with a Bleeding Nose
This concept starts with a good idea: these shoes convert kinetic energy generated when walking or running into electricity that can power a light placed at the front of the shoe. A battery can store energy accumulated during the day, to light the way at night. This concept is probably a good way to come back home with a bleeding nose, in my opinion. Of course, it’s better than nothing, but if you walk in the grass or if there’s an obstacle, the lighting won’t be that efficient. Designed by Feijun Chen & Bin Zhao. Filed under: cellphones, HandheldsThough not quite as impressive as the idea of toppling Intel and AMD within the next ten years, Hynix Semiconductor still has a decent reason to brag today. The South Korean chip producer has announced that it has just started mailing out the “fastest data transferring advanced dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip for mobile devices.” Said chip is the one-gigabit LPDDR2 (low-power double-data-rate 2), which was crafted using 66-nanometer technology and features an 800-megabits per second operating speed at 1.2-volts.
