Video: Thingamagoop alarm clock mod haunts your dreams, wakes you to its nightmare
by Thomas Ricker, posted Apr 10th 2008 at 8:47AM Remember Thingamagoop, the little synth monster controlled by light thanks to the photocell governing the main oscillator? Well, this alarm clock mod requires a 9-volt DC jack and adapter, switch SPDT, and some audio cable and wire to bring it all together. A few snips and solder burns later and voila, the monster Moog alarm clock is born. Man, robots… synthesizers… it’s like the ultimate nerd sub-cult. Video after the break, detailed hacking instructions on the other side of that read link.P.S. Yes, he has throw-switch nipples and a uh, knob. ReadPermalinkEmail thisComments (7)Filed under: Misc. Popgadget poll results on social network fatigue

Popgadget poll results on social network fatigue
We asked readers about “social network fatigue,” which can mean either that you’re getting tired of social networking sites or that you’re simply exhausted from having too much of your time sucked up by online social networking (boredom, on the one hand, addiction on the other). And, indeed, it appears that, at least among those who participated in the poll, this phenomenon is real. 43% of participants said they’re afflicted and have cut back since last year, which could mean the novelty has worn off for them and the experience is no longer so fascinating, or that they’ve stopped shopping around and have settled into one or two sites they use regularly (which is probably good news for established networks like facebook). Bubble Wrap Keychain

Bubble Wrap Keychain
When I caught my entire family popping the bubble wraps covering my CDs, I knew I had to do something or else it’d cost me a pretty penny. This electronic bubble wrap keychain can supply everyone who’s addicted to popping bubble wraps with unlimited bubbles to pop. The eight rubber buttons have the tactile feel of bubble wrap and pressing them, of course, would sound the familiar “pop.” The 100th pressing of a button won’t be a pop though, but something completely different like a dog’s bark–just for laughs. This portable electronic bubble wrap keychain is sold for ₤5 in ThinkGeek. (Read the full post about ‘Bubble Wrap Keychain’…)

FireWire: over a billion ports served
by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 9th 2008 at 9:04PMAlright, so we’ve harshed a little bit on FireWire recently, but we’ve got to stop and give the venerable interconnect some love: the 1394 Trade Association says that there are now over a billion FireWire ports out there. That’s quite an accomplishment, even if we’re not so sure that the group’s claim that “every 1394-equipped device sold now has 1 billion opportunities to connect” is the most accurate or useful way of measuring the success of the technology. SanDisk survey warns of personal flash drive use

SanDisk survey warns of personal flash drive use
USB flash drives have led to the death of the floppy disk drive. Unfortunately, they’ve also introduced some risk when it comes to business data being placed on unsecured flash drives. In fact, it seems that many IT executives and managers don’t realize how much unsecured flash drives are being used. According to a SanDisk survey, 77% of corporate end users indicated that they have used a personal flash drive for work-related tasks. IT executives and managers surveyed only estimated the use to be around 35%. Naturally, such wide use of personal flash drives to store work data increases the risk of such data falling into the wrong hands. We knew Canon’s hot new Rebel XSi was due this month, but it looks like Amazon is once again to the rescue with a specific street date: April 27, which is a bit after the previously-rumored date of the 15th. That’s what, just 5,000 pennies a day to get one by launch? Totally doable.

SlingCatcher delayed again, this time until “sometime in 2008″
by Nilay Patel, posted Apr 9th 2008 at 6:09PM We’ve been waiting to get our hands on the SlingCatcher ever since it was announced at CES in 2007 (and re-announced at this past CES) but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer — Gregg Wilkes, Sling’s VP of sales, has said the product won’t be released this quarter as scheduled, but rather sometime later this year. Sling hasn’t made this announcement publicly, though: Gregg simply emailed a would-be customer his apologies, saying Sling was committed to providing a “compelling and enjoyable user experience and value proposition,” and that the SlingCatcher is still being refined.
