Asus Eee PC 900 sees official release

Written by admin on April 16th, 2008 in Gadgets and Devices.

This hardly seems like news, since we have heard so much about it over the past few weeks, but Asus has finally officially announced the second generation Eee PC. The Eee PC 900 does not stray far from what we have heard over the past few weeks and should not come as a surprise to anyone who has been following the scene lately.

The Eee PC 900 will have an 8.9-inch display, 1.3M pixels webcam, “FingerGlide” technology, and either 12GB (Windows) or 20GB (Linux) of solid-state storage. The original 7-inch 800×480 display will get an upgrade to a much more usable 1024×800 but the weight will stay the same, still being under the one kilogram mark. The upgraded trackpad will have something called “FingerGlide”, so that the system will understand basic gestures such as zooming and scrolling.

It’s not mentioned in the release but it’s been widely acknowledged that this release will not feature Intel’s Atom processor. The Eee PC 900 is expected to have the same Intel Celeron processor as before though this time we should see it at the stock 900MHz, not 630MHz. This will be a disappointment to some but given the timeline it was expected. An Atom-spec’d refresh in a few months would not come as a surprise and would keep the Eee PC competitive with newcomers.
