Google introduces new online world Lively

Written by admin on July 10th, 2008 in Gadgets and Devices.

Does anybody really “play” Second Life any more? Online worlds were pretty popular a few years ago, but that day seems to have passed.

Apparently, though, Google didn’t get the memo as they’ve launched their own virtual world complete with custom rooms and big-headed avatars. It’s called Lively, and the most innovative feature of this world is that it’s browser-based.

Essentially, each “room” is a separate chatroom where you can interact with others while looking like an anime character. So far, there isn’t too much to explore, but there are already rooms for NeoGAF, Google, and (most ironically) Second Life creators, Linden Labs.

Some players have figured out ways to make the world into a game though, by creating rooms that look like chess boards and playing the game with their avatars.

Google is a company that usually sends out extensive press releases on new products, but Lively is getting the silent treatment. There’s no word on what the future of the virtual world holds.

Right now, the avatars and their various accessories are somewhat scant. Will this change over time? Will there be additional items for purchase or might Google start allowing user-created content? Only time will tell, but for now, it seems like the service might be fun if you’re looking for a little diversion for the day.
